Mavis S. McCorkle's Obituary
Mavis Shirley McCorkle, 96, died at home Monday, September 12 after a short illness. She was born in San Bernardino on November 4, 1919 by Robert and Shirley Jackson. Though she worked as a young child in the local orange groves, her first job was at the original McDonalds on E Street. She had two children with her first husband, Carl Weitl. After working for Union Oil Co, she spent a short time in Las Vegas before moving to Olympia, WA where she worked in a fruit canning factory. She then returned to Redlands where she purchased and operated a small restaurant. In 1946, Mavis moved to Walnut Grove, CA where she lived for 10 years and married Eddie Cunya. She then moved to Sacramento in 1957 where she worked as a waitress at a hotel for three years. She married Richard McCorkle and moved back to Los Angeles for a short time before moving to Alabama where she lived and worked until 1972. She returned to Glendale, CA and operated a maintenance business until 1978 at which point she moved back to San Bernardino to care for her mother. She lived at and managed her small apartment complex in San Bernardino with her partner Joe Baptist until she passed. Mavis is survived by her son, Bob Weitl of Fairfield, CA, granddaughter, Elizabeth Ehlers of Sacramento, CA, grandson, Robert Weitl of Lakeport, CA. She was preceded in death by her five siblings, her partner, Joe Batista, her son, Gerald Weitl, and her grandson, Jeff Weitl.
