Helen Pearl Miller Stearns passed away peacefully in her home on March 19, 2015 at the age of 71 after fighting a six-month battle with colon cancer. She is survived by Charles Stearns, her husband of 47 years, her brother Henry Miller, two nieces, a nephew, and three great-nephews.
Helen was born December 25th, 1943 to Joseph and Leah Miller in Cincinnati, OH. Shortly after birth the family moved to Arizona, and finally settled in Burbank, California where Helen spent her childhood. As a youth, she was a violinist at the request of her mother and performed in various symphonies. As an adult, she went to Valley College and then USC for Paralegal School. Helen and Chuck met in 1966 on a ski trip through Lockheed Martin’s ski club, WinSum. They were married in June of 1967. They lived happily in the San Fernando Valley for years until the Northridge Earthquake of 1994 brought them to Big Bear permanently. In 2004, they built their dream house overlooking Big Bear Lake in Fawnskin.
Helen was an active and healthy person dedicating time to the gym, tennis, racket and pickleball, skiing, and later in life; sailing. She was also a committed volunteer donating her free time as a member of the Big Bear non-profit DOVES, served in various roles with CATS theater group, was on the Big Bear Valley Parks and Rec Board, and served as Honorary Mayor of Fawnskin.
She was known as a compassionate friend, loving family member, engaged community member, and ultimate hostess.
