Dear Chuck,

Helen held a special place in my heart. Whenever I think of her I will always remember her warm smile and hug, her genuine conversations, her willingness to drive 3 hours just to be at my baby shower, her amazing cookies, and her delicious challah... I felt blessed she was willing to share her recipes with me! It's heart warming to think that you and Helen have been friends with my parents since before I was born. Her memory will live on forever in the hearts of so many she has touched. She was such a special woman and friend.

Helen was like a Godmother to me. And in fact, I’m sure, had I been baptized, that she would have been my actual godmother since my parents (Allan and Alvena Grossman) were such good friends with Helen and Chuck. But baptism, per se, is not our tradition, at least from some time after the time of John the Baptist (and that’s another story for another day).

I remember how happy I was when I was a child when Helen and Chuck would visit us or we would visit them - always sure to be fun times and something to look forward to all week!

And if my parents with their busy work schedules were not able to take me to or pick me up from an acting class or bar mitzvah cantellations class, then Helen would find a way to work that into her busy work schedule.

And as an adult she and Chuck would graciously invite me up to their home in Big Bear Lake and then their custom built dream home in Fawnskin after that was completed, along with whoever else I might want to bring along, such as my friend Felipe Garcia and even his younger brother Norman sometimes. They would take us all over Big Bear Valley, including Butler Peak, the nature center that Helen volunteered at, and of course exciting outings on their wonderful sailboat on Big Bear Lake. At night we’d invariably come home to a wonderful meal that Helen had cooked and in the morning wake up to her famous pancakes and other wonderful breakfast items, all the while graciously accommodating my food allergies in whatever wonderful items she had prepared.

I could never have thanked her enough for all she did had she lived to 110. She was taken from us far too soon. I will truly miss you, Helen.

Dear Chuck,
What moves through us is a Silence, a quiet Sadness, a longing for one more Day, one more Word, one more Touch.
We may not understand why Helen left this earth so soon, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that she died, but that she lived. And that her life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.

Dear Chuck,

It's been such an honor to have participated in Helen's memorial service, funeral and being the official pallbearers of her casket. Larry has known Helen all his life, since he was a baby, and she was almost like his godmother.

We only have the most amazing, fondest memories of spending wonderful times in both summers and winters with you and Helen.

Helen's pancakes are always the best to me, but I love everything she cooked. She always offered us the most delicious food, even food to take for the road.

Helen has a BIG heart and she lives and will forever live in our hearts and memories. I know that she's blessing all of us from where she is now.

Also, I would like to share this email I got from her from back of 2005, when I took my brother Norman to see snow for the first time in Big Bear.

Hi Felipe.
We have been enjoying snow -- about 3 feet of it -- and it is incredibly
beautiful. We are happy that you and Norman and Larry will come to visit
us. Try to get an early start on Saturday so we can have more time to visit.
It is important to make sure the lights on the car work and that you have
chains that fit the tires. Call us when you get to the bottom of the
mountain so we will know when to expect you. I work on Mondays and don't
think I get off for MLK but Chuck will be here so that schedule works fine.
I can't think of anything I need from LA but thanks for offering.

Lovely Helen,

We have shared so many memories and experiences over the past 20 years: Soup Group, New Years Eves, Friday nights, Passover dinners, Laguna Pageant of the Masters, 4th of July, Doo Dah Parades, and broken yogurt machines on the Columbia River Cruise. Be assured you will live on in my heart and the hearts of those you have touched over the years. So many people are proud to say that you are their friend. You fought a gallant battle but left us way too soon. Our only consolation is that you are now pain-free and resting in peace. I will miss you and love you.

Chuck, JoLynn, Henry, and Diane, as the days, weeks, and months go by, may your incredible sorrow be replaced by the happy memories and love you have shared with Helen over the years.
