Walter Melvin Gers' Obituary
Walter Melvin Gers entered into the loving arms of Jesus on December 30, 2024 at the age of 96. Walt was born on April 25, 1928 to William Frederick Gers and Margaret Brown (nee) Davidson Gers in Osceola Mills, PA. Walt was a loving husband to Mary Dorothy LaFargue since March 8, 1953. Together they traveled the world with the military and grew their family of six children. Walt was a US Air Force MSGT and served twenty years active duty where he saw tours in both Korea and Vietnam, ten years reserve duty and received an honorable discharge for his service on January 30, 1979. He continued to serve our military at multiple bases in Southern California as a private citizen until his retirement in 1990. He also was a member of the Elks Lodge #836 for 35 years.
Survived by his wife of 71 years, Dorothy, his sons Terence (Marilyn) of Yucaipa, Irvin (Helen) of Crawfordsville, IN, Roger (Teresa) of San Bernardino, Keith (Kari) of San Bernardino, and his daughter Sandra of Highland, his grandchildren, Dorothy, Tracey, Lindsey, Katie, Misty, Jennifer, Sal, Phillip, Mallory and John and eleven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild plus many nieces and nephews. Also survives is his brother Irvin Clayton Gers of Mechanicsburg, PA. In addition to his parents Walt is preceded in death by his infant daughter Diane Elizabeth Gers and his brother William Ralph Gers.
Visitation will be held on Thursday January 30, 2025 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Chapel service will be held on January 31, 2025 at 11:00 AM. Both services will be held at Bobbitt Memorial Chapel, 1299 E Highland Avenue, San Bernardino, CA 92404. Burial services will follow at 1:15 PM with military honors at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA 92518.
