Rev. Vincent Joseph Walters
Fr. Vincent Walters was born on December 28, 1921 in St. Louis, Missouri to Charles and Genevieve Walters. He died on July 12, 2012, in Riverside, California. He was baptized on March 12, 1922 at St. Matthew Parish, in St. Louis and attended elementary school in St. Louis and later in San Diego. He graduated from Hoover High School, San Diego in 1939. While attending San Diego State College he was drafted into the US Army where he served almost four years. He later pursued his education at Immaculate Heart College, Los Angeles earning a degree in Business Administration.
Following a call to priesthood, Fr. Vince entered St. Anthony Minor Seminary, Santa Barbara in 1946, and continued at Immaculate Heart Seminary, El Cajon. He was ordained priest for the Diocese of San Diego, May 5, 1954 at St. Joseph Cathedral, San Diego by Most Rev. Charles F. Buddy.
Fr. Vince served in various parishes in San Diego as Assistant Pastor and Pastor, was on the University High School Faculty, and on the San Diego College for Men Faculty. Coming to the Diocese of San Bernardino in 1979, he was co-Pastor at St. Anthony , San Bernardino, Rector of Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral, Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Riverside, where he was also Vicar Forane, and of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, Desert Hot Springs. Fr. Vince retired in 1991 and continued his dedicated priestly service as a supply priest at St. Thomas the Apostle in Riverside and in the neighboring parishes.
Fr. Vincent Walters is survived by his devoted brother Michael of San Francisco, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters Loyola Green and Michelle Lippert.
A Vigil Service will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle, Riverside, 7:00 PM, Friday, July 20, 2012. Bishop Gerald Barnes will celebrate Mass of Resurrection Saturday, July 21, 2012, 9:30 AM at Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral, San Bernardino. Burial will follow at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery in Colton.
