Robert L. Mathews' Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Mathews, born in Vincennes IN, who passed away at the age of 93 at home surrounded by his family. He was the only child of the late Charles Clyde Mathews and Cledith Donovan Mathews Zartman. Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Amelia Yasinsky Mathews, to whom he was married for 54 years.
Robert was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who was loved by all who knew him. He was an alumnus of the University of Dayton and Miami University of Oxford, OH, where he completed his Master’s Degree. His career in hospital administration began at Marin General Hospital in Marin County, CA, moved to Bayfront Medical Center in St Petersburg, FL, and ended with his retirement at St. Bernardine’s Hospital in San Bernardino.
Robert is survived by his children Cynthia Bean (William), Douglas (Catherine) of Apple Valley, and Michael (Mathys) of San Diego; grandchildren Christopher Bean (Danielle), Meghan Jenkins (Trevor) and Courtney Bean; Bowd Beal (Madison), Ashley, Cole and Alexa Mathews; and eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law John Adams of St. Petersburg and many beloved nieces and nephews across the country.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jane Hoblit Mathews, his parents and step-parents Edythe Mathews and Lester Zartman and sister-in-law Sharifa Sally Cady.
Robert will be remembered for his love of family and his selflessness. He loved watching baseball (Cubbies)and football (OSU), houseboating and cruising with the family, and fishing in Canada. He lived a full life surrounded by the love of those closest to him, his family, and friends from his many years in Dayton where he spent his childhood and early adulthood, and his wife and best friend, Amelia.
A viewing will be held in his honor at 10 AM on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at Bobbitt Memorial Chapel, 1299 E. Highland Ave., San Bernardino, CA 92404 followed by a chapel service at 12 Noon. Following a brief graveside ceremony at 2 PM at Hillside Memorial Park, 1540 Alessandro Road, Redlands, CA 92373, a celebration of Robert’s life will be held at his residence in Highland at 3 PM. All friends and family are welcome.
