Bob and I first met at the 1966 Death Valley Encampment. It was a different Encampment then, with only a handful of events scheduled for each day and lasting only four days (Thursday through Sunday). This minimal event schedule encouraged people
to explore Death Valley and the surrounding ghost towns, mining sites, etc. It also gave Bob plenty of opportunities to capture the beauty of the valley with his camera, as well as events like the Burro Flapjack Races. In those days and throughout the following years, Bob was always in demand for his nighttime slide shows, drawing hundreds of people crowding in to see his show.
Throughout the many years I directed the Gold Panning Championships, Bob would be a familiar face at the event, along with his trusty camera. As a past president of the 49ers (1976), Bob's knowledge of the organization, his cheerful warmth, personality, and easygoing manner helped encourage many first timers to become 49er members, and go on to be Advisors and finally Directors.
While I was serving on the 49er Board of Directors, Bob and I began a close friendship
that lasted until his passing this year. Bob was always available for advice and council whenever I needed it. I remember one 49er Board member saying "What we need is
a dozen more Bob Logsdon's". How true!
When I reflect back now on our friendship, I can honesty say that I'm a better man for having know him. Adios, o'l buddy...….
