Our heartfelt condolences to Martha and all of Paul's family, including his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Robert Hunt.
A favorite childhood memory shared by Paul, Marilyn, my brother Bill, and me was playing "Hit the Bat" in the middle of Montrose Street--half-way between the Pinckneys' home on the corner of Oxley Street and Montrose, in South Pasadena, and our house on Mission Street near Montrose. Of course, if a car came, we immediately got out of the way--part of the fun! Paul and I were about 10 or 11. We all would look forward to doing this after school, or on the weekends. Paul hit the ball quite well, and soon was playing in Little League!
Another delightful memory happened many years later. Paul and Martha very kindly took Paul's mother, Barbara, to visit with me at Garfield Park during one of our 1960 Class Reunions. It also was lovely to see Paul and Martha again, as we all now lived on opposite coasts and rarely saw one another. These happy memories are SO special!

Dear Mrs. Pinckney and family,

I am so sorry to hear about your husband's passing. I just came across his obituary while sending information about my father, John Starbuck, who passed away in February. You were my fourth grade teacher at Bonnie Oehl Elementary. You are the reason I became a teacher. I know what a challenging time this is for you and your family. Your husband was an honorable man. I hope you are comforted by your friends and family. God bless you.

I went thru Jr. High and High School with Paul in South Pasadena. However, my first interaction with a member of the Pinckney clan was with Paul's dad, Mr. Pinckney as I was to know him. In the spring of 1954, I tried out for the South Pasadena Little League. Mr. Pinckney was the coach of the team I tried out for. After one of the tryouts, Mr. Pinckney pulled me aside to the dugout. He kindly told me that I had not made the team. However, even though the news hit hard, Mr. Pinckney was very considerate in the way he treated me on that occasion. Before I left, Mr. Pinckney told me that a Minor Little League was forming that summer. I played for the Giants that summer and had a ball. At our SPHS class reunions in 2005, 2010 and 2015, I recounted to Paul my memory of his dad and the positive impact he had on me. I never grew tired of telling Paul the story and he never tired of hearing it. I enjoyed chatting with Paul at our class reunions and was pleased to see Martha at all of them. RIP, my friend. Paul was a caring and fun man. I enjoyed the time we got to spend together in California, Nevada and Argentina. Glad he is going to where every shot is sure.
