I hope my once-removed, cousin Mary is happier now, not having to fight with a brain that won't express itself. I am all too familiar with the effects of the Alzheimer's, and a non-expressive brain too actually, having gone thru supporting another family member with this dreaded disease and surviving a Traumatic Brain Injury myself.
My deepest memories of Mary are the family events at their home in San Bernardino with all my 2nd cousins and the feasts she always prepared so wonderfully! Thanksgiving or Christmas at the Stark's house was always a great memory! Spending the night there and watching the Rose Parade in the morning and later sports with Bobby and David.
You are missed Mary, rest in peace!
I have known Mary for 74 years and am her only cousin on her mother’s side of the family. Although I did not spend much time with her during our adult years she was always as much fun as when we were kids. As a kid I spent a few summers at their place near Kansas City, Kansas where we had loads of fun. Their home was a two-story dwelling with seemingly acres of land surrounding it. Quite often we would have fresh chicken for dinner thanks to Mary’s mother’s ability to catch a chicken and prepare it for our dinner. Mary had a horse with the name of Sugar. She loved that horse. One time Mary and I were riding Sugar with only a blanket for a saddle. With all our bouncing that blanket fell off and Mary told me to get off and get the blanket but I would not do it because I was too young and scared to drop all the way to the ground. Well, I think Mary forgave me and we bounced back to home. When we went back later the blanket was already gone. Mary’s mother helped teach Mary how to drive by letting her sit beside her in the car and drive the car except for operating the foot pedals. Since I was six years younger Mary’s mother let me sit on her lap and drive the car. What fun! By the way, there were no automatic transmissions in those days so we got to shift the gears too. I will never forget those wonderful times. Another time when Mary’s mother was chasing Mary and I around in circles through their four bedrooms upstairs that were connected though the closets, Mary’s mother stubbed her toe and broke it. Ouch! Needless to say we all survived. Mary’s parents were great and I loved all the time I spent with them. Mary ended up with a wonderful family, husband Jim, son’s Bob and David and my thoughts are with them all as they proceed through their lives without Mary. Although I have visited Mary a few times lately, because of Mary’s illness I have missed the real Mary for several years but my feelings are nothing compared to Jim, Bob and David’s feelings as they have watched Mary daily in her declining years, especially Jim in his daily devotion to Mary. I am a better person thanks to Mary. Thanks Mary.
Jim, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Take comfort in the fact that Mary is with our Lord and is not suffering any more. We love you both and are blessed to have had Mary and you as our neighbors. We will miss her.
