Martha Lucille Spence's Obituary
MARTHA LUCILLE SPENCE passed peacefully from this life into the arms of the Lord on Dec. 22, 2010. Lucille was never known as “Martha” to her friends and very large family of two brothers and five sisters, all of who preceded her in death, only as Lucille.
Her faithful husband of 57 years, Joel, also preceded her in 1992. She is survived by her son, Gaylord Spence (and wife, Diane) of Banning, CA, her daughter, Judith Ledford (and husband, Ronald), of Redlands, CA, her three grandsons, Lance Spence (and wife, Nittaya) of Riverside, CA, Christopher Spence of Glenwood Springs, CO, Jeffrey Ledford (and wife, Christy) of Springfield, MO, and one great-grand-daughter, Angelina Ledford, and one great-grand-son, Ethan Ledford, both of Victoria, Australia. Lucille also had dozens of nieces and nephews, who all were very close to her for her entire life.
Lucille was born in Water Valley, TX on October 5, 1917, and her family moved to the Imperial Valley, CA the following year. Her family moved to the San Bernardino area in 1929 where she met and married her future husband in 1935. She and her husband were instrumental in the missionary outreach and growth and expansion of the First Assembly of God church which was then located at 4th St. & Sierra Way in San Bernardino, and later moved to its home of nearly 50 years at 863 N. Mt. View in 1952. Her husband, Joel, as well as many of the men in the congregation, actually helped build the church that was erected at that newer location, and Lucille, as a member of the ladies auxiliary, helped feed the working men of the church. Lucille was a homemaker until she entered the work force in 1957. She retired as office manager of the San Bernardino office of Stationers Corporation in 1979.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, December 30th, at 1:30 pm, at Bobbitt’s Memorial Chapel, 1299 East Highland Ave. San Bernardino, CA, in her remembrance, for all of her friends and family. A preceding viewing period will be held Wednesday, December 29th from 5 to 7 PM.
