Madeline Arter, age 89, passed away on Friday, April 30th, 2010 at Kaiser Hospital in Fontana, CA. Madeline, a 61 year resident of Colton, leaves 3 daughters and sons-in-law – Carole Lee and Gary Wetherington of Brush Prairie, Wa, Susie and Darrell Hill of Westchester, CA and Nancy and Steve Berger of Redondo Beach, CA – and one daughter-in-law, Christina Baer Arter of Grand Terrace, CA, wife of her son, Robert Arter,who passed away in March of 2009. In addition to her daughters, Madeline leaves behind 9 Grandchildren, 13 Great-Grandchildren, one sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Dick Stowe of Hinesburg, VT and brother/sisters-in-law, Forrest and Gwendolyn Rose of Redding, CA and Charlene McCullar of McCurtain, OK. Her extended family, and dearest friends include the Ayala Family of Colton --- Salvador, Frances, Mary Frances and Anna Marie and their families -- and Jeannie Wiles of Clinton, MA.
Madeline originally came to California from Leominster, MA after World War II. She and her husband, the late Berman Lee Arter (of Lee Arter’s Texaco station in Colton) lived in Colton for about 61 years. Madeline taught music and catechism at Immaculate Conception Church in Colton for many years, heading up the Children’s Three-Part Choir during the late 60’s and into the 70’s. She also taught a weekly religious class for Special-Needs Children. Madeline graduated from San Bernardino Valley College with an Associate of Arts Degree in Music, and continued her studies at UC Riverside in the Music Department.
Madeline will be terribly missed by her family, as well as by all of those lucky enough to know her. A Rosary ( May 5th, at 11:30 am) and Mass (May 5, 12 pm) will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church at 1106 N. La Cadena Drive, Colton, CA. Immediately following the Mass, Interment Services will be held at the Arlington National Cemetery in Riverside, CA.
