Mr. John Strickler's Obituary
John “Jack” Walter Strickler was born in San Bernardino in 1926. He was educated in local schools attending Arrowview Junior High and San Bernardino High School graduating in 1944.
Like most of his classmates, Jack entered the service during World War II. He became a Machinist’s Mate and served as an aircraft mechanic in the Navy stationed in Hawaii. Upon his return from the service,
Jack graduated from San Bernardino Valley College. He married Lila Shaw in June of 1948. Jack worked in the land title business with several companies and in 1963 entered the real estate sales business. He opened his own office in 1967. He served with many community organizations. In 1976 he was elected President of the San Bernardino Board of Realtors. In 1979 he won election to the San Bernardino City Council representing the Seventh Ward. He was re-elected to a second term in 1983. He retired from the Council in 1987 and did not seek re-election.
In 1989, Jack began work on a senior citizen apartment project sponsored by Highland Lutheran Senior Housing, a non-profit group. The 50-unit project was completed in 1994 and Jack and Lila served as resident managers until August 2013.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Lila. He is survived by his three children, John and (Cathi) Strickler, Ann and (Steve) Croudy and Judy and (Terry) Albert, 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great children. Funeral services will 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Spirit of Hope Church, 1820 E. Highland Ave. San Bernardino, Ca. with private interment to follow at Mt. View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial may be left to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, www.jdrf.org.
