JOHN PRESTON MILLER, M.D.
AUGUST 19TH, 1921 -------------------- FEBRUARY 26TH, 2014
John died peacefully, at age 92, in San Bernardino with his family present just two days after celebrating his 62nd wedding anniversary with his wife, Jo Ann.
He was born August 19th, 1921 in Excelsior, Pennsylvania to Walter Allen and Elizabeth Miller, the youngest of three sons.
John graduated from Coal Township High School in Shamokin, Pennsylvania----President of his classes!----Temple University School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia---President of his classes!---and Marquette University School of Medicine in Milwaukee, Wisconsin---President of his classes!
John served in World War 2 and was called back to serve in the Korean War. He was sent to Norton Air Force Base in 1956 and he and Jo Ann decided to stay in the Valley, where he practiced his specialty, Obstetrics and Gynecology, for 30 years. He practiced at St. Bernardine’s, Community and Loma Linda Hospitals. He was the physician at Cal State University San Bernardino Student Health Center after retiring from private practice.
John was an active member of the community, serving on the Boards of the YMCA, Home of Neighborly Service, Boy Scouts of America and both St. Bernardine’s and Community Hospital. He was elected to the San Bernardino Unified School Board in 1965 and served proudly for 16 years, twice as Board President. He was very proud of the fact that he signed both birth certificates and diplomas for many of the children he had delivered!
He and his family began traveling in their motorhome in 1967, visiting 49 states and Canada making sure to see Universities and baseball games. He enjoyed traveling and he and Jo Ann also took many cruises and trips to Europe.
John was an advocate for education so he made sure that his children were encouraged to do their best in school, at work and in their daily lives.
John is survived by Jo Ann, his wife of 62 years and five children; John Jr., Beth Wright, Barbara, Neal (Bob), Brian (Jenny) and grandchildren, John Wright, Teddy and Eliza Miller.
John was a caring, giving, loyal Christian who loved his family first and foremost. He will be fondly remembered by family, friends, coworkers, patients and many others as John never knew a stranger.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either the Salvation Army or First Presbyterian Church in San Bernardino.
