Jesse "Jay" P. Hubbs' Obituary
Jesse “Jay” Hubbs born August 29, 1939 in Loma Linda, California to Paul and Lucile Hubbs. Jay passed away on Sunday July 20, 2014, peacefully at home. Jay grew up in the Colton area where he enjoyed playing baseball. He graduated from Colton High School in 1957. Jay married the love of his life, Janice in1958 and would have been married 56 years this coming September.
Jay went to work for his father at the age of 14. He bought a bulldozer in 1958 at the age of 19 and went into business for himself. One of his jobs he was proud of as an owner/operator was a road cut in the Cajon Pass. Jay’s father Paul realized what an asset Jay was to his company and invited him back where he rose to become company president.
Paul Hubbs Construction was Jay’s home away from home for over 60 years as a business owner and an operator. He took on the task of biding jobs and running the day to day operations at various job sites and multiple rock quarries. Jay was initiated into the Operating Engineers on October 5, 1957. Dedication, hard work, long hours were Jay’s work ethic. Some of the company’s many accomplishments included multiple sections of the Santa Ana and San Gabriel Rivers, a joint venture project at the Lake Arrowhead Dam, San Juan Capistrano seawall. The company supplied rock products for emergency work to the Army Corp of Engineers as well as the Railroad Engineers. Another accomplishment was the sale of a 340 ton granite rock to artist Michael Heizer. This “Levitated Mass” resides at the LA County museum.
When it came to relaxation, Jay did get away with his family to San Clemente or the dunes in Glamis, where dune buggies and fast motorcycles were the fun! Jay and his family spent time at his vacation home in Lake Mead, NV where he enjoyed boating and fishing. Jay also enjoyed trips to NASCAR races with many of his close friends and family. Recently he went on a road trip to South Dakota to visit Mt. Rushmore and an Alaskan Cruise – made many memories for his family to cherish.
Jay - Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Uncle and Friend - one AMAZING man we are so proud of. You have taught so much to all of us and we can only hope we can someday make you proud of our accomplishments – because we have learned from the best! When the grandkids and great grandkids would visit, you could see a smile emerge from a very proud Grandpa. A highlight of his day! Jay touched many lives with his generosity, giving, and carrying ways. We will miss your one and only laugh/chuckle!
