I just looked up Mr. Vandermer because I wanted to send him an email. He was my teacher 8-9 years ago and I still hear his voice narrating my math problems whenever I am calculating anything. I was just working on some calculations now and remembered I've been meaning to tell him that for years and show him how much he's influenced me. It seriously broke my heart so much to see that he's passed. I wish I reached out sooner. He was an amazing teacher, made me a great mathematician, and he believed in me when I was struggling. My condolences to his family - he was a very special person.

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Vandermer was my Trigonometry teacher and one of my favorites. He will be missed.

Sometimes people come into your life and stay in your heart forever. I knew Jim in McMurray, PA when he taught Algebra at Peters Township High School (1972). He was 28. I invited Jim to Southern California for Thanksgiving dinner in 1983. He fell in love with Southern California and immediately started sending out applications. He was excited to start teaching at Cajon High. Sometime later our lives went in different directions however I thought of him often. Today I was reflecting on people in my past who have carved a place in my heart and "googled" Jim and saw the obit. My heart is heavy with sadness. I.L.Y.A. or I.A.L.Y.

Mr. Vandermer was a teacher whose impact on me cannot be understated. As my next door neighbor, and my best friend's dad, I saw him a lot. He wasn't a warm fuzzy kind of guy, and he didn't tolerate his students being lazy. He pushed relentlessly, and before you knew it, you started to understand. I'll always remember him calling me Mr. VAT, after my go-to theorem when I wasn't sure how to finish my proof. Thank you, Mr. V for not letting me settle for mediocrity. You will be missed!

As I peruse this tribute wall, it's not surprising that this man has impacted so many lives. I learned of Mr. Vandermer's passing today, from my wife, who also had the privilege of being one of his students. While only occupying one hour a day for one school year of my life, Mr. Vandermer sure made a lasting impression on me. His teachings transcended the subject matter as well as the class room walls.

I just heard of Jim's passing. I am so sad... but I know he would just want me to toast a drink to his memory. He was a mentor to me, a father figure, and a friend. I regret I have lost touch over the past few years. I miss u, Jim

Mr. Vandermer was an excellent teacher. He offered to stay after school for tutoring even though there may only be one student who needed help (me!). He was someone you respected as a father/grandfather-like figure but whom you can also share a laugh with. He will truly be missed.
