James Ray Merrill's Obituary
James Ray Merrill, 77, passed away peacefully in his home on December 31, 2025, surrounded by the family he cherished above all else. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great‑grandfather, James lived a life rooted in love, loyalty, and the simple joys that made each day meaningful.
Born with the heart of a caretaker and the spirit of a steady hand, James was the ultimate girl‑dad and a consummate family man. His happiest moments were spent in the company of his daughters, grandchildren, and great‑grandchildren, whose laughter and milestones brought him endless pride. He found joy in life’s quieter pleasures, a good movie, a great meal, a trip to the beach, or the comfort of being near those he loved.
James dedicated his career to the railcar industry, retiring as a respected supervisor known for his reliability, generosity, and unwavering work ethic. Outside of work, he was a loyal fan of his Angels, Rams, and Lakers, cheering them on every season with the same steadfastness he brought to every part of his life.
He faced his battle with cancer with courage, grace, and the quiet strength that defined him. Though the journey was not easy, he met it with the same resilience he carried throughout his life.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 35 years, Ruth Ann Merrill, with whom he shared a deep and enduring partnership. Their reunion brings comfort to those who mourn him.
He is survived by his daughters Jeanette Merrill‑Henry, Joanna Merrill, and Jennifer Heim; his grandchildren Jarred and Jillian Heim; and his great‑grandchildren Jackson, Elliot, and Rylee Heim, all of whom will carry forward his legacy of kindness, steadiness, and love.
James will be remembered for his generous heart, his reliability, and the quiet but powerful way he showed up for the people he loved. His presence will be deeply missed, and his memory will remain a blessing to all who knew him.
