Doris Marie Payne's Obituary
Doris Marie Payne was born in Woburn, MA on June 10, 1923. She graduated from St. Charles High School, Woburn MA, in 1940. Doris entered the convent in 1941, joining the order of Sisters of Notre Dame De Namur as Sr. Catherine Roberta, and later as Sr. Doris Marie. She received her BA degree from Emmanuel College in Boston in 1956, majoring in History and English. She received her MA degree from the University of Hawaii, Honolulu in 1962, majoring in Social Sciences. She also received her California Secondary Teaching Credential from Loyola University in Los Angeles in 1962.
From 1944 to 1969, Doris taught all levels, from kindergarten to high school, for the Diocese of Boston, Honolulu, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Monterey. She was a vice principal and principal for the Diocese of San Francisco and Monterey.
Doris left the convent in 1969 to care for her mother, and subsequently for her dear sister, Christine.
Doris enjoyed her working days and made lasting friendships while at The Broadway Department Store in San Bernardino, Notre Dame High School in Riverside, and Aquinas High School in San Bernardino, where she was the librarian until her retirement. She also enjoyed many happy travels with Christine and other family and friends.
After her sister Christine passed away, Doris spent many delightful summers in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, where she had a beautiful home resembling a lighthouse. Her years spent at The Lighthouse were truly her glory days.
In 2002, Doris had sold The Lighthouse, as well as the home on Belle Street in San Bernardino, and moved to Sun Lakes senior community in Banning, CA, where she continued to enjoy life each and every day, especially when she was tending to her gardening. She always looked forward to joining her Sunday morning Mass friends, very front row, at Saint Kateri Catholic Church in Beaumont. No one could miss her crotchet beret!
More recently, as her health began to fail her, Doris resided at Wildwood Canyon Villa Assisted Living in Yucaipa, CA, where she was so loved and lovingly cared for.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents Clifford Austin and Katherine Theresa (Maguire) Payne, and her brothers and sisters, Katherine (Callahan), William, Marjorie, Robert, Loretta (Campbell) and dear Christine.
Doris leaves behind many nieces and nephews and their families, all of whom had a special place in her heart. She also leaves behind so many dear friends and loving neighbors. We will all miss her spunk, and her crotchet slippers!
Given Doris' pure love for kittens and puppies, cats and dogs, and her gratefulness for her caring friends with Kindred Hospice, please consider a donation to either of these causes, or to a cause dear to your heart.
Services will be held at Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church on Monday, November 27, with the Rosary at 10:00am, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am. Burial services will be held on Wednesday, November 29 at 10:00am, Mountain View Cemetery in San Bernardino.
