Doris Jean Coonrod's Obituary
Doris Jean Coonrod, wife of Curtis L. Coonrod for more than forty-seven years, and mother of two sons, Bruce of Yucaipa, California, and Robert of Mentone, California, passed away in the evening of Thursday, October 19, 2023. She had recently celebrated her 91st birthday.
Doris was born to John D. Shaw (Freda) in Barnes, Kansas, where she spent her early years helping her family to manage a large rural farm of milk cows, hogs, chickens, corn and milo. At 18, she met her future husband Curtis, a local public school teacher, and was soon married at 20 years of age in 1952.
Doris is survived by sons Bruce (Lisa), and Robert (Ossie); ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; as well as three brothers and one sister.
Besides raising two sons, Doris was an accounting supervisor at First American Title Company in San Bernardino, California for thirty-two years. She was an accomplished cook, and always willing to prepare new and exciting meals for family dinners. She was a runway model for a number of years in the 1960’s, participating in galas, shows, and fundraisers. Throughout her life, Doris was a seamstress, and could do wonderful things with her commercial sewing machines. She often had young ladies standing high on her workbench while having their prom or wedding dresses constructed, altered, or repaired. Doris was very proud of the “Clothes Closet” charity that she started in 2007 at the Del Rosa United Methodist Church in Del Rosa, California, where she would tirelessly seek donations of clothing, wash and mend them, fold or hang them carefully, and then offer them to the local community and families at no charge. By 2018, the charity was serving hundreds of local families and children.
A woman of depth, grace, and multiple talents, Doris will always be remembered by her family and friends.
A private service will be held at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.
