Senor Smith. I miss sir. I caught myself thinking of you on a drive home. I enjoyed all our talks, your advice and motivation. Big time.
I was a sister in law to Don for many years, being married to his twin brother, Douglas. I did not know him well, but Don and Doug are very much alike. When Don and Maria moved from Houston to California, Maria had come ahead and stayed with us for a while with Little Don and David. Don remained in Houston to pack up the house and then complete the move. Back in those days, U-Haul trucks were not automatic but stick shift which come to find out, only I knew how to drive. I volunteered to go back and help Don drive out to California. It was a brutal trip, we powered straight through. He drove when we were on a straight stretch (no shifting). He never hit anything but somewhere along the line we crashed into the overhang of a fast-food drive through, and I also ran over a rabbit.. He said "It's already dead!! Keep going, keep going!" The trip took 36 hours.
Don and Doug and all the Smith brothers were opinionated and passionate in their beliefs, especially politics. Don't get them started. As all the family and probably a lot of friends can attest, any BBQ or party was a very loud and boisterous occasion, always huge fun, and never boring.
I live in another state now, but the last time I saw Don is just how I want to remember him, talking with Doug at a family gathering. Never a dull moment, and I will miss him.
Sincerely,
Marian Howe
