I've heard the word "Cheerleader" be used to describe Criss, and it's absolutely spot on. Criss was not only a cool fraternity brother; we'd known each other for years. But he was a supporter and encourager. He asked me to speak to his kids a couple times. The first time was in 1999. And it was the second speech I had done after my sister had died. At that time i was really struggling and questioned whether I had anything good to say. He was a bit sheepish about the fact that the AVID program has 3 or 4 units, meaning i would have to speak to three or four groups in a row. But I NEEDED it actually. it was the best thing that could have happened to me at that time. And I think i remember what I wore that day, for all these years, because of how important it was. Another time, he had me come to career day. and while professionals went to a lot of the classes, there was an opening assembly with the whole school, and he asked ME to do it. Took a bit of courage--I am always worried about middle school kids because sometimes you have to compete for their attention. But, I dug deep because of Criss, did an old school rap of my own and we were on the road. Again, I spoke ALL day. When i lost my election for city council, he sent me a nice email reminding me that integrity was everything, and that there were great things ahead of me. Criss was the CHIEF encourager, because he encouraged the encouragers. His love of people, and being in relationship, was so pure. I always felt better just being around him. There's nothing like a bro you trust reminding you that you are ok. And he did that for me and for so many others. I will always be grateful for him.
