March 5, 1927 - September 20, 2018
Helen Louise Adair also known as Smiley of San Bernardino, passed away at age 91 on September 20, 2018. Family who supported and loved her surrounded her when she passed on. She was born in 1927 in Everett Washington to Leila and Clarence Carlson and moved to Highland in the 6th grade. Her teacher taught her to knit and later she learned to sew which she did beautifully for many years. She graduated from SBHS and attended an art college in Los Angeles for two years. She started dating Dick Adair after he returned from WWII and was attending San Diego State. They were married in 1948 at the Chapman Park Hotel in Los Angeles on the radio show “Bride and Groom.” They spent their honeymoon in Salt Lake City, compliments of the show. Their first home was in Perris, CA ultimately living in San Bernardino to raise their family. Smiley raised their 4 children providing all the support needed for her kids to go swimming at grandpa’s pool, be active in school activities, events and sports and all with only one family car, always a station wagon. She was in a bridge club for many years and she loved to read. Sometime in the mid 60’s Dick and Smiley discovered golf, which became an activity they religiously pursued for the rest of their lives. They enjoyed many years of golf and friendships through their membership at Arrowhead Country Club. Another pastime they enjoyed and excelled in took place on any dance floor that existed in their presence. She started working in a golf Pro Shop in the 1970’s and retired from her job at Victoria Country Club when she was well into her 80’s. Her part-time work never kept her from the three-week road trip vacations they took right after Labor day every year. They would go all over the great Northwest incorporating golf into their travels and visiting as well as meeting new friends along the way. She is predeceased by her beloved husband and is survived by her children sons; Greg, Pete and daughters; Jan Lewis (Hank) and Susan Rucker. She has 5 grandchildren; Natalie Lane, (Ronnie) Katie Lewis, Kelsey Lewis, Sydney Rucker and Hoss Rucker; great-granddaughter Hadley Lane and her beloved sister Bernice Wilson. The family invites donations in Louise's name to a charity of choice in lieu of flowers. Friends and family members may attend her service on Tuesday, October 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, 22405 Van Burn Blvd., Riverside, California, 92508.
