Grief and the Holidays

Grief and the Holidays
The holiday season can be a difficult time for those of us who are grieving the death of a loved one. Holidays hold tremendous meaning for all of us. How we have observed and celebrated them over the years, ties us to family and friends. Now our lives have changed and the holidays will never be the same again.
Every holiday season since the death of my daughter, one line from the movie, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, comes to mind. Prince John, frustrated by his inability to capture Robin orders that Christmas be canceled. If only we could.
Since we can’t cancel Christmas, here are some suggestions on how to handle this season. Anticipate and intentionally plan for the holidays. Acknowledge and accept your own feelings and decide what you feel you can comfortably handle. Don’t let others force you into doing something you don’t want to do and don’t be afraid to make changes. Allow yourself to have some fun; it won’t be a sign of disloyalty to your loved one.
